Trainer’s Development Conference- July 17th

Unit’s,

Don’t forget about the Trainer’s Development Conference being held this Saturday, July 17th, from 8:30-4:30 at Mt. Vernon!  The conference is only $10 and includes all your material and lunch.  The location is at Lighthouse Assembly of God behind Jean’s Restaurant in Mt. Vernon.

The success of your pack or troop will primarily depend on the quality of the trained leadership you have at the helm.  The best way for you to have trained leadership is to have a pack or troop trainer that can train all your incoming leadership on a schedule that fits your unit!  Please consider sending someone from your unit to this training!

Jenny Wiley Theatre Scout Night

Be sure to attend our district’s next big event- “Scout Night” at Jenny Wiley Theatre.  Showing will be “Jack and the Beanstalk” with show time at 8:15 on Sunday evening, July 25th.  Ticket prices are $12 per adult, and $9 per Scout/sibling.  This includes your ticket price and the patch for the event.  Pre-registration is open on www.bgbsa.org under the Lonesome Pine district link.  Pre-registration is required by July 11th!  If you show up at the door without pre-registration the ticket prices jump to $14 per adult, and $11 per Scout/sibling!

Popcorn Kernel Training Set

For the units that have signed up to sell popcorn- popcorn kernel training is set for Thursday, August 12th at 6:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Prestonsburg (where we have roundtable).  Please make plans for as many leaders as possible from your unit to attend!  It’s worth an additional 2% in commission for your unit!  If you have any questions please get in touch with me at 606-821-8121 or Michael.Vernon@scouting.org!

Commissioner Service Under way!

The Lonesome Pine District is back functioning with commissioner service!  This will do nothing but improve the quality of our district and your units!  We’re very excited about this development and for what it’s going to bring!

A commissioner is a volunteer who is a teacher, coach, mentor, and friend to 3 units throughout our district.  The commissioner helps with issues the unit may be having (kids quitting program, not enough adult help, not enough funds in account, etc.) and helps each unit improve (trains more leaders, ensures each unit recharters on time, etc).  Your commissioner will be able to respond to your unit more quickly than your district executive will be able to and can help provide that one on one coaching you may desire.

Welcome to new Pack 833 in Paintsville

I’d like to welcome Mountain Community Fellowship and pack 833 to the Lonesome Pine District!  The church and it’s leadership is adopting Pack 833 that was meeting at Central Elementary.  Adding several boys and leaders to an already great program is nothing but a win for Paintsville and the BSA!  A big thanks to Pastor and charter representative Jason Hutchinson, new Cubmaster Lora Beth Bangham, and committee member Nate Hager for already going through Cub Scout leader specific training!

Popcorn Unit Commitment Forms

It’s time to gear up for popcorn sales again!  I realize that the sale won’t start until the fall but now is the time to begin to get things and people in place.

Step #1: Recruit your popcorn kernel!  This is vital to your success!  Find someone who will be the unit’s cheerleader and will be the contact person for popcorn for the unit.

Step #2: Fill our your “popcorn unit commitment form.”  This form is just saying that your unit will commit to sell popcorn this fall.  If you fill it out and send it back in by June 30th, you will receive an additional 1% commission for your local unit.  That form can be found under the “popcorn” section of www.bgbsa.org.  Please don’t let this date sneak up on you!

Cub Scout Summertime Pack Award

While Scouting is tied closely with the school year, we certainly encourage each and every one of our packs to participate in Scouting throughout the summer.  Vacations and baseball sometimes make that difficult, but Scouts will always find a way to be there if there’s something fun in store!

Even if you can’t meet each week, think about having a picnic or day at the park one weekend.  Maybe visit a local museum or get together for a big parent vs. kid’s game of kickball.  Kids are in Scouts for the outdoors and the summer is the perfect time for it!

District Spring Camporee very wet- but fun!

This past weekend the Lonesome Pine District held it’s annual Spring Camporee at Elkhorn City.  Sandwiched between the thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday night, everyone had a wonderful time on Saturday during the day.

Our Boy Scouts had the wonderful opportunity to learn about tracking, fire accelerants, fishing, and do some whitewater rafting!  A big thanks to Steve and the crew from the whitewater rafting outfitters coming down to have some fun with the boys.
